VIRAC, Catanduanes -- In support of the National Greening Program (NGP), the policemen here were directed by Philippine National Police (PNP) provincial director Superintendent Lito Pitallano to plant six trees each monthly until 2013.

Last week, Supt. Pitallano and Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) representative PENRO Joaquin Ed Guerrero, signed a memorandum of agreement (MOA) wherein the PNP and DENR will identify suitable areas for the establishment of forest nurseries as well as identify areas for tree planting activities of the PNP.

The recommendation about the specie of forest tree suitable for propagation in Catanduanes shall likewise be made by DENR. They shall also extend technical assistance in seed sourcing, collection, processing and storage as well as establishment of nurseries and facilities.

Moreover, DENR shall provide planting materials to PNP for initial tree planting activities.

On the other hand, PNP will provide manpower and other logistics for the establishment of their nurseries and production of planting materials, and tree planting activities. They must also monitor the operation and maintenance of the nurseries.

Also present during the singning of MOA were CENRO Luvimindo Chioco, Deputy PD Supt. Rodolfo Quinones, PCR Officer Insp. Maria Luisa Calubaquib, policemen, and local media. (MAL/EAB, PIA Catanduanes)
