The House Committee on Transportation has already approved the bill on motorcycle safety filed by AKO Bicol Party List (AKB).

House Bill 3360, which seeks to mandate the registration of helmets at the Land Transportation Office and mandating said office to provide reflective stickers bearing the plate numbers of the motorcycles, will be consolidated with three other bills of similar nature and purpose.

The other bills are HB 2185, authored by Rep.  Mary Mitzi Cajayon of Caloocan (2nd district), HB 2445 by Rep. Lani Mercado-Revilla of Cavite (2nd district) and HB 5345 by Rep. Theresa Bonoan-David of Manila (4th district).

The AKB representatives want an immediate passage of the bill. Rep. Christopher says, “There have been so many reports of crimes committed with the use of motorcycles. It is alarming. But the efforts in identifying the suspects are very dismal because the motorcycle has only one plate number and it is very difficult to see.”

Rep. Alfredo Garbin of AKB also agrees. “Motorcycles are easy get-away vehicles, because on-the-go assassins can easily escape after using it as a means to attack targets while caught in traffic.”

“This becomes a duty of the State to ensure the safety of the increasing population of motorcycle riders and the rest of the riding public,” added Rep. Rodel Batocabe. “We know that motorcycles are a cheap and convenient means of transportation, but we should regulate its usage to prevent its abuse.”
