SNIPER PATROL September 23-29, 2013
HONESTY I think it was Benjamin Franklin who said that HONESTY IS THE BEST POLICY. And there was also a famous CEO, if my memory serves me right, who said that HONESTY IS STILL THE BEST POLICY.
Around 18 centuries or so ago Marcus Aurelius - the Stoic Philosopher and Emperor of Rome, author of the famous book entitled: “Meditations” (other translator of his work uses the title “Communion Unto One’s Self”) have written: "A man's true greatness lies in the consciousness of an honest purpose in life, founded on a just estimate of himself and everything else, on frequent self examination and a steady obedience to the rules which he knows to be right, without troubling himself about what others may think and say and do, and whether they do or do not do that which he thinks and says and does." (Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/3922488-Tim Ong) No wonder Mark Twain can write unhesitant: “If you tell the truth you don’t have to remember anything.”
You might be thinking by now, my dear reader, “So what’s the point Mister Sniper?” Simple, amidst the controversy about the pork barrel and all these other issue about corruption, it boils down to the issue of HONESTY.
Sadly it is a virtue that it seems have been relegated to the dustbin of Filipino consciousness and daily life. It is a far cry from the simple and honest life of our ancestors.
If my memory again serves me right, hindi naman mga kawatan ang ating mga ninuno. Our ancestors, we can proudly say were men and women of honest and noble character. Saan kaya nagmana itong mga kawatan nating mga opisyales sa gobyerno?
Mukhang mga alien ang mga eto. May mga sanib ata at walang pakundangan kung makapagnakaw sa pera ng taong bayan. And in spite of it they enjoyed being called HONORABLES.
With all these issues circulating about the pork barrel one is reminded of the question: Where all the honest Filipino men and women gone? It seems there is now a proliferation of dishonest men and women in our government. They are multiplying like cockroaches. And so we appeal to the value/virtue of HONESTY.
But honesty can only operate in a society that is rooted in the Judaeo-Christian Tradition, without which this call for honesty in our government and in our daily lives will come to nothing. Still without the Christian Faith pervading as the root of our Filipino culture and society, nothing concrete will ever happen for the transformation of our Filipino politico-economic-socio-cultural conditions.
For the simple reason that, as what the Saints, that Cloud of Witnesses, have long ago realized; only CHRIST can bring about transformation to each and every one, to our families, and ultimately to our society.
